TPE — the private-label default

TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is the material most new brands start with, and for good reason. It is odourless, free of PVC and phthalate plasticisers, light enough to keep cross-border shipping costs sensible, and its closed-cell structure does not absorb sweat. Most private-label TPE mats use a double-layer build — a dense support base bonded to a textured grip surface — in 4–12 mm (5/32"–1/2") (5/32"–1/2") thicknesses.

The main trade-off is wet grip: textured TPE is reliable in dry practice but gets slippery once saturated. For hot yoga, look at PU instead.

NBR — the studio workhorse

NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) is a thick, cushioned synthetic rubber. It is cheap, very durable and forgiving on joints, which is why it is common in gym fleets and beginner kits. The downsides are weight, a noticeable rubber smell when new, and limited recyclability. If your buyer is a studio buying in bulk and cleaning daily, NBR's durability often outweighs its weight.

PVC — cheap, durable, increasingly restricted

PVC mats are the cheapest to produce and extremely hard-wearing. But PVC requires plasticisers to be flexible, and phthalates are exactly what EU REACH and California Proposition 65 target. Most US and European consumer brands have moved away from PVC. It survives mainly in promotional giveaways and markets with looser chemical rules. If you sell into the EU, budget for 6P/7P-free test reports or choose a different material.

Natural rubber — best grip, heaviest mat

Tapped from rubber trees, natural rubber delivers outstanding grip and cushioning and is biodegradable at end of life. It is a strong story for eco-positioned brands. The practical constraints: it is heavy (roughly double a TPE mat), it has a natural latex smell that fades slowly, and it is unsuitable for buyers with latex allergies — a label consideration in most markets.

PU + rubber — the hot-yoga specialist

A polyurethane top layer laminated onto a natural-rubber base is the premium option. The PU surface actually grips better when wet, which makes it the standard for hot yoga, Bikram and power yoga. It commands the highest unit cost, and the PU layer wears faster than TPE or NBR, so it is sold as a performance product rather than a general-purpose mat.

Is PVC still used for yoga mats?
